Subscription Boxes: Yay or Nay!

Sara Hardwick

1. It's the gift that keeps on giving, maybe too much?....but that could be a good thing.

Many of these gift subscription boxes are monthly, or quarterly, and while most people do not need that much stuff, you are still getting a nice touch point in.

For small businesses, and solo professionals especially, subscription boxes may be an inexpensive, and automated way of getting individuals on a gifting schedule. Essentially, sending subscription boxes are your own little gift fulfillment service.

BUT that "too much stuff" component is important. Major emphasis on STUFF. Are you giving something that gets thrown in the trash? Or are you giving something that they actually keep + remember you with?

Sending subscription boxes are not exempt from the importance of quality and fit. Don't pick a box with a whole bunch of random items and think that it will have an impactful effect on your recipient...because chances are it won't.

But if you know them, and you REALLY KNOW they enjoy puzzles with their family....there's puzzle subscription packages out there for you to give (who knew!):

It's not quite the shock and awe that we teach, but it's something that for a step in the direction toward automated gifting, this works, and it is a starter ticket to top of memory-ness.

Okay, number one is done...moving on.

2. It becomes predictable

While the first receiving of the subscription box may come as a surprise to your recipient, every month, or quarter after that, it probably won't.

Much of the magic that we teach in gift giving is giving at those unexpected moments. Subscription Boxes, that are set to send on calendar dates are aimlessly planned and expected.

Just something to think about (:

3. Subscription Fatigue IS REAL.

I mean, I know that I get it, but this figure shocked me....

If 47% of consumers are tired of subscription services, it may be a good idea to gain understanding on their subscription preferences BEFORE taking this step. If you know they are one of those people who get groceries via Hello Fresh, and love to fill their closest with Rent the Runway, GIFTING them a subscription box may not have that GIFT feel....because it's already a part of their everyday life.

4. Payment, and stopping that payment, gets tricky!

Somebody will be dealing with a monthly charge, and at some point, you probably will stop it.

Is that an awkward conversation to have? What if they absolutely fall in love with the subscription you send them. Are you okay to continue to keep this up?

This gifting practice is pretty cool + pretty fascinating to me. I'm always looking to get creative.
